Scotland’s Chief Statistician today (24 April 2013) published the results of the 2012 Scottish Survey of Literacy and Numeracy (SSLN). This is the first time that literacy results have been published from this annual survey which monitors national performance in literacy and numeracy in alternate years. The survey covers pupils at P4, P7 and S2. The full report is available using the following link:

• The majority of pupils in all stages are performing well or very well at the relevant CfE level in reading: 83 per cent at P4 (First Level), 90 per cent at P7 (Second Level) and 84 per cent in S2 (Third Level).
• Around three quarters of P7 writing scripts demonstrate pupils are performing well, very well or above Second Level. For both P4 and S2 the figure is around two thirds.
• Performance was least strong in listening and talking. Performance in P4 and P7 was similar at 56 and 58 per cent of pupils performing well, very well or above their CfE level, whilst the figure for S2 is 46 per cent. Seventeen per cent of S2 pupils are not yet working within their CfE level.
